At SYRF we divide our teams by age and grade, not skill level.  All of our kids have the same opportunity to learn and advance.

2nd - 4th Grade
Our 2nd - 4th grade team is an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn about the sport of basketball.  We focus on basic skill development, rules of the game, game structure and the importance of teamwork.

5th - 6th Grade
Our 5th / 6th grade teams are more competitive.  This is their first experience of playing teams from all over the city.  We also provide an opportunity to travel to a local overnight tournament during Presidents Day weekend.  For most this is their first time traveling as a team and they really look forward to the opportunity.  On the court the knowledge level increases too.  We introduce multiple plays, full court defense, and various half court defense schemes.  We also emphasize using both hands for dribbling, whereas before it was just encouraged.

7th - 8th Grade
Our 7th / 8th grade teams continue to play at the same high competitive level.  In addition these teams will participate in local basketball
tournaments throughout the year.  In the summer of 2011 our 7th / 8th grade team participated in the Spokane Hoopfest tournament, the largest 3 on 3 tournament in the nation.  This is another wonderful experience for everyone which we plan to continue as a tradition.

At this level SYRF will also provide additional opportunities so the kids can learn the value of community service and giving time to others.  The kids become assistant coaches by helping with the younger groups during camps and practices.  They also help with the planning and preparation of various SYRF events.  Beginning this year the 7th/8th grade will be developing a team community service project of their choice.
